Do I have to select a pediatrician now?

For insurance purposes, if you are required to select a pediatrician, you can choose anyone from our practice, or the name Watchung Pediatrics.

Watchung Pediatrics offers a variety of providers. We encourage new families to schedule appointments with several of them prior to selecting one that you feel a connection with. Once you have selected your provider, please advise the receptionist. We will update your chart to reflect your primary care provider. No matter which provider you choose, you can be assured you will receive the same excellent care and attention.

Do all physicians participate in every insurance plan?

All of our providers participate in the same insurance plans. If we participate with your plan, no matter which provider you see or which location you go to, the visit will be processed the same. Please see the separate list of the insurance plans we participate with.

Which hospital should I go to?

Most hospitals will ask for the name of your pediatrician when you are admitted to deliver your baby, so please let them know that you have chosen, Watchung Pediatrics. We have privileges with both Overlook Hospital and St. Barnabas Medical Center so at either hospital, the delivery nurse will contact us as soon as the baby is born and we will see your baby within 24 hours of birth and daily, until the baby is discharged home. If you deliver at a different hospital, the hospitalist team will care for your baby and then you will be given a summary of the baby’s stay to bring to our office for your baby’s first appointment.

What happens during our stay in the hospital after delivery?

In the hospital, you will have an opportunity to learn more about your baby and get answers to any questions you might have. Before you leave, your baby will undergo routine newborn tests such as screens for hearing and jaundice in the nursery as well as a metabolic screen that is sent out to the state.

If your baby has any complications during your pregnancy or delivery, the baby may be examined by a staff pediatrician or neonatologist at the hospital at the time of delivery. Other tests may need to be done if your baby develops any problems after birth or to follow up on any unusual findings on your prenatal sonograms.

When will your baby’s next exams take place and how often will you see my baby for checkups and immunizations?

After discharge from the hospital, we generally see your baby for a follow-up visit within 48-72 hours after going home as per the American Academy of Pediatrics. At this visit, we will discuss any hospital issues, feeding concerns, check your baby’s growth and development, and do a thorough exam. This is also your chance to ask ANY questions you may have with regard to your baby. ANYTHING that concerns you is important to us.

We will also discuss when the next visits will be and what immunizations are needed. Generally the first Hepatitis B vaccine is given while still in the hospital or at the initial visit in the office. The next series of vaccinations are received when your baby is four to eight weeks old.

During your baby’s first year of life, additional visits to our office should take place at two and four weeks of age, and then again at two, four, six, nine, and twelve months of age.

During your baby’s second & third years of life, well visits are scheduled at ages fifteen, eighteen, twenty-four, thirty & thirty-six months. Subsequently, well visits are encouraged annually.

Additional appointments can be scheduled any time that you have a concern that your child is ill or for any other reason.

Can I always see the same provider?

It depends on the type of appointment. Well visits are scheduled in advance, so yes, appointments are scheduled with your selected primary care provider. When your child is sick, our focus is to have your child seen that day. So for same day sick or if you are taking advantage of our walk in sessions, we cannot guarantee the appointment will always be with your child’s primary care provider.

Can I be a patient in one office and go to another?

Yes. For continuity’s sake, we ask parents to designate a primary office. This is so paperwork, such as lab results and letters from specialists, are consistently sent to the same place. Several of our pediatricians are associated with more than once office. Parents may prefer to take advantage of Warren or Millburn’s walk in sessions, but have their well visits scheduled in one of our other offices. For the convenience of our families, we are happy to provide the opportunity to choose which office best suits your needs.

I’m expecting a baby; can I schedule a visit to any of your offices to meet the providers?

Yes, choosing a pediatric practice for your child is one of the most important decisions to make before delivery. Please call any of our offices to make a complimentary appointment to visit an office, meet our staff, providers, and ask us any questions about your upcoming delivery and care for your newborn.

Do you offer “newborn only” hours?

To limit our newborn’s contact with multiple people, we try to schedule our newborn visits when the offices are less crowded with sick children. For this reason, depending on the office, our newborn appointments are scheduled either first thing in the morning or around the lunch hour: last appointment of the morning and/or first in the afternoon.

How do walk-in hours work?

Our Warren and Millburn offices offer morning and afternoon walk in sessions Monday thru Friday. The Millburn walk-in hours are 8:30am-9:30am and 3:30-4:30pm. The Warren walk-in hours are 8am-11am and 2pm-5pm. This convenience is offered to our patients for acute care issues, such as cough, ear pain or a sore throat. Patients sign in and are seen on a first come, first served basis. Many parents enjoy the flexibility of bringing their child in based on their own schedule and avoiding the necessity of calling for an appointment. If you prefer, a specific appointment time you do have the option of calling to schedule an acute care appointment in any of the offices instead.

What happens if there is an after-hours (nighttime or weekend) concern or emergency?

Pediatric Urgicare is our after-hours covering service from 6pm to 6am daily. There are dedicated nurses who are trained in pediatric triage available to offer advice and they will relay any information discussed to our offices for the following day. For urgent medical issues, the nurse will instruct you to an appropriate urgent care facility or emergency room.

On weekends, our on call doctor is available on Saturday afternoons and on Sundays from 6am until 6pm when our offices are closed. If the pediatrician determines your child needs to be seen, they may arrange a time to meet in the office to have your child evaluated.

How far out do you book appointments?

Well visits and consult appointments can be scheduled 3-6 months in advance. Please keep in mind our provider schedules fill up quickly. Please call as soon as possible, particularly if you have specific schedule requests (ie. certain time of day). We will try to accommodate these requests to the best of our ability.

What if my child needs a form filled out for school or a refill on medication?

Our nurses and providers work on health forms and prescription refills every day. The summer months are particularly busy for the upcoming school year. We are happy to complete forms for you, but please be aware that our regular turnaround time is 3-5 business days. There is an expedited form charge for patients who need their forms completed on an urgent basis. Please keep in mind that in order for a school form to be completed, your child must be up to date on his or her well child visit.

Prescription refills vary according to the specific medication or health condition. Many can be prescribed electronically, however controlled substances, such as ADHD medications, need to be physically picked up at the office. Please give us at least a week’s notice prior to the medication running out to prepare the prescription and have it ready for pick up. It is also required for some controlled medications, that routine visits be made to one of our offices every 3 months so please be sure to schedule the follow up appointments before the medication runs out.

Are there any out of pocket expenses I should be aware of?

Yes. Not all services are billable or covered under an insurance plan. Some examples of additional expenses include completion of forms, rental of a nebulizer machine, missed appointments, copying medical records and any check returned for insufficient funds. Please consult our financial policy for a list of additional costs that you may incur.

Do I need to bring an insurance card to each for each office visit?

Yes it is a requirement of all insurance companies.

If you don’t accept my insurance, can my family still come in for a visit?

Yes, we welcome your family to join us as your medical home, but payment is required at the time of service. We will gladly provide you with a receipt that can be used to submit a claim for reimbursement. We also offer a sliding scale fee schedule program based on a family’s income.

What is your office cancellation policy?

While we understand that unforeseen problems occur, we ask that you cancel appointments at least 24 hours in advance so that other children can use the appointment time. We do charge a fee of $50 for families that don’t show up for an appointment on the weekdays and $75 on the weekends and fail to cancel within 24 hrs. When a family consistently fails to cancel their appointments in a timely manner, unfortunately, we may need to ask them to find another medical home.

If I have a balance on my account, can I pay it over the phone or online?

Yes, we take credit card payment by phone during business hours and also offer secure and convenient online bill pay via our website and mobile app.

What is the vaccination policy for Watchung Pediatrics?

At Watchung Pediatrics we truly believe that vaccines are safe and that vaccinating children and adolescents to prevent them from acquiring life threatening diseases is probably the most important service that we offer to our patients. We follow the AAP and CDC guidelines regarding vaccine administration and recommend that vaccines are given within an acceptable “window” according to the established schedule.
