Community Health Alert - Stomach virus

Community Health Alert

Currently there are many patients coming in for symptoms that include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, specifically the Scotch Plains-Fanwood area in which parents have received a letter from the school. Click to read more.
Viral illnesses, in this case a viral gastrointestinal illness, are usually self-limiting and symptoms can be alleviated with fluids, rest, and supportive care.

Give your child small frequent sips of fluid at first until the vomiting stops, then increase the amount slowly. Once fluids stay down, the diet can be advance slowly.

If symptoms persist greater than 48 hours of if the symptoms or are severe in nature, then it is advised by the school to see a healthcare provider.

We should also see you in the office for signs and symptoms of dehydration such as decreased urine output, dry mucous membranes, or lethargy.

Tips to control the spread of a virus like this are:

- Wash hands often and thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

- Keep hands away from your face.

- Keep cell phones and other personal belongings off contaminated surfaces.

- Don't share eating utensils, cups, etc. Do not touch or prepare food while sick.

- Wash all fresh fruit and vegetables.

- Do not return to school until symptoms have resolved for 24 hours and may depend on the school policy.

- In our offices, please go to the sick waiting room, take advantage of the hand sanitizers, and please try to refrain from touching objects for public use (toys, stickers, etc).
